There is a certain magic in our inclination to find the charm in the ordinary. Amongst the outlets used to nurture this tendency is the one and only, the tried and true, Pinterest app.
While other social media remain as platforms, Pinterest is the dressing room backstage, where concepts are curated through the myriad of boards detailing an idealised version of what our life could be like, and the energy we wish to exude to the world.
Although it is important to stay grounded in our own reality, Pinterest is the perfect app for daydreamers and romantics alike. It relieves the visions simmering in the recesses of our mind; sometimes too arcane to conjure through words in a journal or a very detailed Google search, other times just basic enough that the inspiration pictures are endless.
There, amidst the mosaic of dream homes, outfit inspirations and DIY project ideas yet to be touched, is the desire to insert ourselves into each image: nestled on the gorgeous green corduroy sofa adorned with throw pillows that cost as much as the rent, or basking in a Santorini summer followed by a winter in New York City, having absolutely no flights booked to either places.
This life may not currently exist beyond the borders of that private folder titled something hopeful, but the smidgen of hope still lingers well enough that it remains possibly so, neatly arranged into quaint squares and rectangles that may just be the stepping stones in bringing it to fruition.
And although bringing that “dream home” Pinterest board to life might not be attainable in a day, a week or even a month, making the most of a sunny afternoon can still be done in almost an instant.
So, find a spark in the dreadfully sensitive algorithm set out for you; pull out that novel gathering dust on your shelf; throw on a cute outfit; buy that questionably priced coffee; sit at a nice park; and bask in the charm of it all.
